Approximating the best Nash Equilibrium in n -time breaks the Exponential Time Hypothesis

چکیده
The celebrated PPAD hardness result for finding an exact Nash equilibrium in a two-player game initiated a quest for finding approximate Nash equilibria efficiently, and is one of the major open questions in algorithmic game theory. We study the computational complexity of finding an ε-approximate Nash equilibrium with good social welfare. Hazan and Krauthgamer and subsequent improvements showed that finding an ε-approximate Nash equilibrium with good social welfare in a two player game and many variants of this problem is at least as hard as finding a planted clique of size O(log n) in the random graph G(n, 1/2). We show that any polynomial time algorithm that finds an ε-approximate Nash equilibrium with good social welfare refutes (the worst-case) Exponential Time Hypothesis by Impagliazzo and Paturi. Specifically, it would imply a 2 ) algorithm for SAT. Our lower bound matches the quasi-polynomial time algorithm by Lipton, Markakis and Mehta for solving the problem. Our key tool is a reduction from the PCP machinery to finding Nash equilibrium via free games, the framework introduced in the recent work by Aaronson, Impagliazzo and Moshkovitz. Techniques developed in the process may be useful for replacing planted clique hardness with ETH-hardness in other applications. ∗Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, [email protected], Research supported in part by an NSF Award CCF-1215990, an NSF CAREER award (CCF-1149888), a Turing Centenary Fellowship, a Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, and the Simons Collaboration on Algorithms and Geometry. †Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, [email protected], ‡Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, [email protected]. Inapproximability Results for Approximate Nash Equilibria
We study the problem of finding approximate Nash equilibria that satisfy certain conditions, such as providing good social welfare. In particular, we study the problem ǫ-NE δ-SW: find an ǫ-approximate Nash equilibrium (ǫ-NE) that is within δ of the best social welfare achievable by an ǫ-NE. Our main result is that, if the randomized exponential-time hypothesis (RETH) is true, then solving ( 1 8...
متن کاملApproximating Nash Equilibria in Tree Polymatrix Games
We develop a quasi-polynomial time Las Vegas algorithm for approximating Nash equilibria in polymatrix games over trees, under a mild renormalizing assumption. Our result, in particular, leads to an expected polynomial-time algorithm for computing approximate Nash equilibria of tree polymatrix games in which the number of actions per player is a fixed constant. Further, for trees with constant ...

Nash [13] introduced the concept of Nash equilibria in non-cooperative games and proved that any game possesses at least one such equilibrium. A well-known algorithm for computing a Nash equilibrium of a 2-player game is the Lemke-Howson algorithm [11], however it has exponential worst-case running time in the number of available pure strategies [15]. Recently, Daskalakis et al [4] showed that ...
متن کاملError bounds in approximating n-time differentiable functions of self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces via a Taylor's type expansion
On utilizing the spectral representation of selfadjoint operators in Hilbert spaces, some error bounds in approximating $n$-time differentiable functions of selfadjoint operators in Hilbert Spaces via a Taylor's type expansion are given.
متن کاملApproximating Nash Equilibria and Dense Subgraphs via an Approximate Version of Carath\'{e}odory's Theorem
We prove an approximate version of Carathéodory’s theorem and present its algorithmic applications. In particular, given a set of vectors X in R, we show that for every vector in the convex hull of X there exists a “nearby” vector that can be expressed as a convex combination of at most b vectors of X , where the bound b is independent of the dimension d. Using this theorem we establish that in...
